Ontario is Canada's largest and most liquid scrap metal market, with over 200 licensed yards operating across the province. The Greater Toronto Area alone accounts for a significant share of national scrap volume, and that competition between buyers tends to produce higher yard buy prices than most other provinces. Steel HMS1 is the volume metal — scrapped vehicles and structural steel feed Ontario's electric arc furnace mills in Hamilton and elsewhere. For car scrapping, Ontario requires a vehicle ownership permit (or a bill of sale if the original is lost). Most major yards offer free flatbed towing in the GTA and surrounding cities.
